In this episode I interview Cindy Perliss, Director of the award-winning Art for Recovery program at the University of California San Francisco Comprehensive Cancer Center. One of the program’s projects is called the Firefly Project – where middle and high school students are paired with adult patients who are coping with cancer or AIDS. They exchange hand-written letters and personal artwork, poetry or music, and — as we’ll find out — so much more. In this podcast, Cindy communicates her extraordinary mindset regarding living, sharing, dying and healing.

In our 39th episode, you’ll hear:
– What prompted Cindy to create the Firefly Project, and how she pairs a student with a patient as pen pals (over 70 students participated in 2006)
– How the partners form rewarding relationships sight unseen over a nine month period
– Why this program addresses three key needs we all have in our life
– What happens if the patient dies during the time frame — and how this sad scenario turns into an opportunity for many to learn about love, dying and healing
– How students and patients culminate the end of the program – you won’t want to miss hearing about this moving Art for Recovery event
– What one piece of advice Cindy would give to others

To learn more about the program visit the Art For Recovery website or email Cindy at: cynthia.perlis@ucsfmedctr.org.

Podcast #38 of Xtraordinary Living is out. In this episode I interview Bob Dalsimer, founder of Inspira Group, Inc. a Laguna Niguel real estate, lending and escrow firm. With the headlines posing gloom in the media every day regarding the real estate industry, I wanted to find out how someone who actually is IN the business handles this day-in-day-out negativity.

Bob shares his viewpoint of the “sky is falling” scenario. We discuss the what, the why – and most important the “how” he shifts his thinking to create good out of the media-driven gloom and doom.

In our 38th episode, you’ll hear:
– What Bob considers is the mortgage industry’s current state of affairs.
– How he would have viewed this challenge during the 1994 downturn.
– What would have been his thinking then versus now — and why.
– How he and his Inspira team are using this time period as a call to action.
– Why Bob realizes he needs practical hands-on ways to help himself stay on track.
– What helpful piece of advice he would give to others.

In this episode I interviewed one of PL&L’s corporate clients, Founder and CEO of REZA Investment Group Reza Etedali. I believe you’ll find Reza’s background highly inspiring, and his way of doing business a breath of fresh air in an often stagnant corporate America.

When we think of big business, often we imagine the CEOs to be impersonal human beings; corporate big-wigs who are so dedicated to making money they have little time to care about the people around them . .. be it family or employees. In this podcast you will hear in Reza’s words as well as in his calming voice, a kind and generous man building his vision through collaboration to support all of the people in his life.

In our 36th episode, you’ll hear:
– How Reza came to the US to pursue his dreams. Follow his careers from age 14 until now, as the twists and turns created his current extraordinary life.
– Why he was driven to start his own business.
– How important it is to have a vision and direction with an environment to support them both.
– Why Reza made the decision to change his sales model from competition-based to one of collaboration.
– What the results have been, even as he saw people leave the company when the changes were made.
– How Reza felt when one of the investment group’s best months occurred while he was on holiday for a month.
– What advice he has for weathering the daily “sky is falling” media barrage.
– and more!

When I asked Reza what he would most like to be remembered for — he replied, “Somebody who helped make this world a better place.” Please visit REZA Investment Group to find out more about Reza and his company.

Andy has the distinction of being PL&L’s highest frequent flyer miles client. For the past nine years, Andy has commuted for weekend, year-long and Learning Vacation courses from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to PL&L’s Southern California location.

In this episode Andy covers his journey to “Experiencing the Unknown.” From his early college years to his current “over-60, but feeling 20″ life, Andy gives us a glimpse at what it’s like to “choose” the “unknown!”

In our 33rd episode, you’ll hear:

– What driving life interest led Andy from central California, to Denver, to Los Angeles to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
– When and why Andy first got hooked on Learning Vacations.
– Why, at age 50, Andy decided to take up scuba diving and has now achieved the status of Master Diver with a specialty in Ice Diving.
– Why it’s vital to Andy’s extraordinary life for him to keep pushing the envelope and experiencing the unknown.
– and more.

Episode # 32 of Xtraordinary Living is out. Since for many people living an “extraordinary life” seems unattainable, from time to time I do solo podcasts where I talk about how to move from the same old, same old to the extraordinary. As the musical intro suggests – “living life to the max” is one way to live an “extraordinary life.” In this episode I cover “Awareness, Motivation and Ability (AMA) the Improvement Continuum.” Without desire, awareness, skills and practice, one can easily find themselves off the path to living large.

In our 32nd episode, you’ll hear:
– How AMA is a prescription for success, but not one subscribed by your physician.
– What are the four stages of improvement and the role desire plays in getting the wheels in motion.
– What is your EQ? (Hint – it’s not taught in school.)
– How the ability to delay gratification is an important indicator of your future success.
– Why awareness and motivation are not enough to make improvements in your life
– How in order to move from the mundane to the extraordinary you need daily practice.
– What are some easy ways to develop your abilities?
– and more.

Impatience is a sign that one hasn’t “got” the AMA principles. EQ and abilities can often take years to develop. Through a regular schedule of personal growth courses an individual can expedite this process. It’s like joining a gym to get in great shape, you can think about, join, BUT if you don’t show up and use your membership you won’t see the improvement you originally desired when you paid your membership fee. Living an extraordinary life requires commitment, yet it seems effortless once you start to enjoy the results!

When you open your Internet news browser, read your paper or change your TV channel, it won’t take long to read about hybrid autos, earth-friendly products or global warming. The words, “green,” “sustainable” and “socially responsible” have taken on new meaning in the 21st century. As individuals leading, or striving to lead Xtraordinary Lives, the topic of Socially Responsible Investing or SRI is one that deserves our understanding. This informative podcast is an quick and easy way to get “in the know.”

Justin Martello, a financial advisor with Blue Summit Financial Group was my featured guest. Founded in 1994 Blue Summit Financial Group, Inc. specializes in ethically and socially responsible investing options tailored to a person’s values and goals. Born and raised in Michigan, Justin’s passion for the environment began in high school when he helped form a club called Students for Environmental Action. He further pursued his interest and obtained a B. S. degree in Resource Ecology and Management from the University of Michigan, School of Natural Resources. Since that time, he has gone on to obtain his financial advisor credentials.

Justin has taken a number of PL&L courses, and we have watched him create his extraordinary life with his wife Barbara. He works in a “perfect-fit career” one that is aligned with his personal mission and values.

In our 31st episode, you’ll hear:
– What is Socially Responsible Investing (SRI)?
– How does it relate to living an extraordinary life?
– What is the history behind SRI — from its beginnings in the 16th Century to date?
– Why the “clean technology” sector is creating waves in the financial community?
– What are some of the current issues the SRI industry is working on?
– Do you have to sacrifice portfolio performance when you invest responsibly?
– How did Justin align himself with his ideal career?
– and more.

There are a couple of common phrases that may come to mind as you listen to this podcast. “Put your money where your mouth is (values are)” and “Money flows to where it is treated best.” In our courses we let our clients know they vote for their values through their pocketbooks and time. This podcast gives us all something to think about. For more information on Socially Responsible Investing, call your current financial investment advisor or Justin Martello at (888) 698-4330.

Since I have received several requests from listeners to explain how to get from the mundane here…to the extraordinary there, I recorded this episode to address the topic “Feeling Better, Doesn’t Necessarily Mean You’re Getting Better.”

In this 30th episode, you’ll hear:
– Why “good” is the enemy of “great.”
– How our society has become obsessed with comfort.
– Why taking risks both physically and emotionally boost your chances of living an extraordinary life.
– How an extraordinary life is not a place, but a process of living. It’s traveling the journey, not the destination.
– What successes can be achieved when you push beyond your ordinary limits.
– and more.
